I was attending a work-related course in a all-female class recently when some thoughts suddenly sprang up. Being the only guy in the class, I wondered how the rest of the ladies feel/react. I was definitely the odd one out and even for someone like me who had studied in a female-dorminant Biz studies course during my poly, and worked under a lady boss before, I still felt a little out of place despite my experiences.
Coincidentally, I'm the only guy admin in my Department office and maybe due to the job nature, a number of courses I attended were female-dorminant as well. It's funny how some mentality exists in an environment like that. I'm definitely the first one my colleagues would approach for physical-related tasks like carrying stuff, loading/unloading equipment, documents, etc. Some common stereotypical situations often occur to me, mainly being asked to do the "mens'" job, etc. So far, I've being the cleaner, repairman, construction worker, handyman, courier, etc in my Department *lol*
Also, I'd wonder whether a typical man would really 'survive' in that kind of environment when he's got no one to talk about soccer, women, beer, corny dirty jokes, etc...hahah. Luckily I have my share of some 'pro-female' topics like hairstyles, clothes, relationships, entertainment, etc *phew* *lol*
I'm curious on the ladies' point of view though...Do they feel 'threatened' in a way? Do they try to 'convert' that only guy to their office lifestyle or welcome him to share his 'men's world' with them? I don't know...sometimes I do feel 'threatened'...or isolated, like some alien freak (especially during courses)...but at times, they do look at me like some hero or something when I fixed their copiers *roll eyes* Heh. I'm glad for my case, the ladies often appreciate my share of thoughts when they want some guy's point of view on things. And I'm just as happy to gain some insight to theirs :)
Some interesting trivials:
-When my supervisor calls out 'Ladies...', she meant 'the ladies AND me'
-When students at the counter say 'I can't remember who attended to me but one guy...'. Yep, that's me.
-Strangely, some potential overseas students addressed me as 'Ms Chun' when writing/emailing me. Hmm...
...and my long hair doesn't help at all *lol*
