Time out.

Weekend was nice. Watched 'Monster' with Meiyan after our sushi dinner on Saturday. The film was pretty sad at times and it's tragic to see what love (of any type) can lead a person to. The soundtrack is pretty nice too. Will check out on one of the songs used during the 'love-making' scene. heh. Went Borders for book-browsing and they always say 'boys will be boys (and girls will be girls):

While I was *ahem* picking up some 'tips'...

...she just had one thing on her mind...

*lol*

Anyway, spent the rest of Sunday practising for the upcoming performances and I'm glad I'm doing pretty fine with 7 new songs. Might play a little PS2 or watch some DVDs later. I've been missing out on these lil self-indulgence in life ;)

Back to basics

My instrumental rendition of Vivien Hsu's '她他' (right click and 'save as')

While searching for unplugged songs to cover for an upcoming performance, Vivien Hsu's '她他' (Ta Ta) popped into my mind since I'm a fan of Sugizo (Japanese band, Luna Sea's guitarist) and he wrote and played this song with Vivien. It's a really beautiful song and it'd be nice if I can cover it.

I learnt this song a few years back when it was first released. The actual song is in a lower tuning but I've decided to play it on standard tuning since I wouldn't wanna tune down my guitar just for this song during performance. Supposed to record the standard tuning for my vocalist to 'test-run' it but I 'went overboard' and indulged myself by throwing in all the bells and whistles *lol*

Anyway, despite the tiny miss-timing on some parts, I really like the results of recording :) It's soothing enough for me to keep looping it before I sleep...hahah.

For those interested, here's something about the recording:

-The high-pitch 'noise' at the beginning is supposed to sound like seagulls. In the original song, Sugzio used his violin to create the effect. I just used my guitar and some delay :)

-Sugizo also played the violin solo in the middle of the song. I don't have (and can't play) one, so it's just my guitar and some delay effect *lol*

-The electric guitar bit near the end is really tough to record as it involves consistent 'hammer-ons' and tappings techniques...and it's amazing when Sugizo does it in its full glory; mine's just a 'simplified' version of it.

Are you Hot or not?

A simple entry and a simple question:

If you're a pretty girl/good-looking guy, do you tend look out for someone who's in the same league as you (as in also pretty/good-looking)? Of course, I'm not purely talking about appearances, since there are nice people who looks good as well :) But I'm curious whether those blessed with good looks tend to think they deserve someone of a 'higher standard'...

...a question which is sparked by [DISCLAIMER] observations made purely from my own experiences and what I've seen so far:

Most of the time, prettier girls have a more good-looking/hunky boyfriend.

On rarer occasions, pretty girls end up with guys who score low in the looks department (but are usually rich).

On even ultra rare occasions, pretty girls end up with guys who's neither good-looking nor rich (but probably has an outstanding character).

Sounds like a sexist comment, but I assure you it's not. Being a neither good-looking nor rich guy (plus, I'm vertically challenged, ok!), I'm merely shouting out my grievances. Heh. So, will the pretty girls please stand up and comment? *lol*

I foresee this reply coming "then don't look for pretty girls lah!!!"...hahah...

Ordinary Day

Song of the day: You can't hurry love (Phil Colins)

Today's a perfectly normal day (some would yell 'blasphemy!' *lol*) despite being Valentine's day. Since I've been single for....wait a min...I've always been single! *lol*, for every year in my life, this day would either pass unnoticed, or possibly end up like a typical slacking day. Sure, way in the past, I might have cringed on being without a date or an activity but I've been 'enlightened' ever since donkey years that it's no big deal :) Of course, things will probably change when I have a significant other, but for now, I'm pretty much a happy (and old) member of the Singles' Club :P No need to worry about what to buy, where to bring her to, how to please her, etc. I'm savouring my current status as I indulge myself in the things I'd like to do, on stuff I'd like to spend my money on, plenty of leisure time, personal space, and the freedom (or excuse) to take 2nd (and more) glances at other girls *lol* I've learnt that I might as well as enjoy things at the moment rather than lamenting at it, for when the time comes when I'm attached, I won't regret the 'would-bes' and 'might-have-beens'.

So, no matter whether you're single or with a partner, happiness is self-sought. It doesn't come just because you're in certain status.

...and in my 'bo liao-ness' (boredom), I've come up with this corny thing below:

The wonders of V-day:
- Couples wear matching clothes that'd deem them crazy if worn on a normal day.

- Almost every lady in a couple carries flowers in every form.

- Food seemed to be scarce on this day as restaurant and eating places raise their prices to exorbitant levels...

- ...while flowers seem abundant and everywhere on the streets, people desperately try to sell them...

- ...not only to couples but groups of smelly, sweaty guys too.

- People around me turn weird on this day and seem to be baffled by a seemingly thought-provoking question they'd ask me: So, where are you going today/tonight?

- Suddenly, guys turned into the timidest creatures on the planet, "I'm afraid I can't (insert whatever verbs/actions)...you know what day it is today/my girlfriend will be angry, etc"

- As though a curfew/ban has lifted, couples sprang up everywhere on the streets, and freedom of expression is exercised like there's no tomorrow.

- Occurence of mysterious effects on human behaviour ranging from the sudden surge in depression in singles, to excessive self-expression in couples.

- Other than Teachers' day, lecturers/teachers receive flowers and gifts today as well...not for their hard work in teaching, but as potential victims of some student secret admirers.

- Boosting Singapore (and probably worldwide) economy through increased spending for/by loved ones.

- However, massive depletion of resouces occur on this day too...with increased chocolate consumption (milk), buying of cards (paper), food frenzy (poutry and vegetables), junk-mail/adverstisements/promotions (media)

- but the real 'wonder' of it all, is that how come it isn't a public holiday? :P

Pick up the beans! (Dzap Dau Dau)

Went to catch Hong Kong female-trio punk band, Dzap Dau Dau perform at the Esplanade last night with some of the LGF members. Was pretty amused by their songs cos they combine the numbing riffs and simple drum rhythms with cute vocals and harmonising. Quite easy to get stoned to the music *lol* The girls are cute too...haha....I think it's always the case for people like us who plays instruments or being in a band that we're attracted to the opposite sex who does the same thing...hahhah...

At the end of the gig, one of the directors (whom I think brought the band here) filmed and did an impromptu 'interview' with us (cos we were standing right at front of the barrier *lol*) on the music scene locally and all...she encouraged us to explore playing overseas, like in Hong Kong, Taiwan, etc. Too bad we couldn't chat with the band or something...hahah.

Beautiful scene of the nightlightsvocalist/guitarist Meg Fung and drummer/vocalist Myth Li in the backgroundanother shot of themQuiet bassist, Po, playing her headless bass...more mind-numbing riffs to go...Bought their EP. Really cute design!
